About SEADAR™

As radar unlocked the skies, SEADAR™ unlocks the ocean’s depths.
SEADAR™ is the first underwater radar system capable of detecting, geolocating, mapping, and tracking all forms of metallic materials in the ocean.

Who We Are

SEADAR™ was created by a team of scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs who share core values, motivated by scientific challenge, adventure, and duty towards the common good. We are an ocean technology company seeking to illuminate what lies beneath the sea and advance the sustainable and environmentally responsible development of the Blue Economy and maritime security.

What We Do

SEADAR™ extends the capabilities of active electromagnetic sensing to marine environments, providing operators with critical data which fill the gaps left by conventional subsea sensors. Determining the presence and location of conductive objects in the ocean is imperative for search, analysis, monitoring, and defense of subsea terrain and marine assets.

The core SEADAR™ technology has two configurations:

  • SEADAR™ Survey – Vessel-Towed Metal Detection Radar
    • Long Range Target Reconnaissance – Detect the presence of large targets from far away.
    • Small Target / Geolocation Scanning – Precise mapping of conductive objects of interest and hazards in survey zone.
    • Sub-Bottom Penetration / 3D Mapping – See targets buried in the seabed subsurface.
    • Differentiation of manmade conductive material from anomalous natural geology.
    • Unrivaled detection of isolated nonferrous metals in the ocean.
      • Sonar unable to specifically identify the presence of metals
      • Magnetometers unable to detect nonferrous metals
  • SEADAR™ Shield – Underwater Intruder Detection Radar
    • Continuous Real-Time Monitoring – Detect, observe, and track multiple, simultaneous conductive objects/craft throughout the water column.
    • Modular System – Create an underwater surveillance fence with customized coverage for varied environments and security needs.
    • Definitive Identification of Manmade Metallic Intrusions – Get higher target identification confidence and counteract sonar’s susceptibility to operator/AI error in differentiating manmade vs. natural targets.
    • Anomaly Detection and Security Assurance – Identify anomalies in routine activity and unauthorized/covert intrusions, allowing fast and accurate responses to potential threats.
    • Advanced Stealth Detection – Spot craft using noise-dampening/distorting technologies like anechoic tiles or stealth propellers, reducing security vulnerabilities.

Applications/Market Sectors

SEADAR™ can sweep large areas to detect and geolocate unexploded ordnance (UXO), particularly the nonferrous varieties invisible to traditional magnetometer surveys, allowing for their safe removal and subsequent installation of offshore infrastructure.
SEADAR™ can be deployed in the renewable energy sector for site survey for the installation of offshore wind platforms, infrastructure monitoring, and environmental impact assessments—opening new areas for licensing which have hitherto been precluded due to the presence of legacy munitions, wrecks, and other metallic debris littering the seafloor, which current technology cannot efficiently locate.
SEADAR™ can be utilized in site survey and environmental impact assessment for the installation or decommissioning of offshore oil and gas platforms, reducing cost and risk, and provide sustained monitoring of subsea pipelines, platform anchors and ancillary drilling equipment.
SEADAR™ Shield provides sustained real-time security monitoring and intruder detection for harbors and other sensitive maritime assets.
SEADAR™ can be used in the mapping, monitoring, installation survey, and repair operations for subsea data cables.
SEADAR™ can perform precise quantitative assessment of mineral deposits by concentration (e.g., polymetallic nodules, cobalt, manganese, nickel, gold, silver, copper, tin, zinc), reducing the time and cost required to complete surveys of ferrous and nonferrous minerals. SEADAR™ could decrease the carbon footprint of the survey and mining processes and reduce environmental impact to ocean ecosystems by minimizing the need for grab samples.
SEADAR™ can significantly improve existing performance of surveys for lost ships and cargo, valuable commercial equipment, aircraft, and AUVs, reducing the time and cost of these operations. SEADAR™ could be deployed in the event of catastrophic failure of manned submarines when time to locate is paramount to safety and preservation of life.
SEADAR™ can be used to assist in the discovery of historical shipwrecks and their associated artifacts.

How We Do It

  • Ultra-Low Frequency Radio Waves (ULF)
    • Harnessed by taking advantage of saltwater signal attenuation of electromagnetic radiation
    • Interact only with conductive materials
    • Allows penetration of non-metallic materials
  • Multi-Band System (Survey)
    • Multiple simultaneous frequencies allow geolocation of targets within the survey zone in all three dimensions
    • Unique interaction of multiple frequencies with targets provides composition information
  • Multi-Static Radar (Shield)
    • Multiple nodes of transmit/receive antenna groups are dynamically controlled to provide wide-area, overlapping detection coverage and target localization
    • Inherently jam-resistant
